Hub Ottawa - a new, dynamic social innovation centre in Ottawa - provided urbanforest founder, Kyla Farmer, with the opportunity to showcase the initiative in a Q&A style session at their 3rd Hub & Spoke on February 29th, 2012. This was a wonderful opportunity to inform a large audience about what we do, and where we want to go. We had a lot of fun, and hopefully will be able to get video footage to show you how it went. For those in the Ottawa area, make sure to drop in to Hub Ottawa at 71 Bank St., 6th floor. Open 7 days a week, and here to help you foster ideas, launch a business or organization, and welcome you into a community energized for positive social change in Ottawa.

In the photos are Leah from Nia Kaia - a local eco-friendly jewelry business, Malorie from Ef Magazine, and urbanforest founder Kyla. We hope to have Nia Kaia style accessories for an upcoming photoshoot!

P.S. Kyla was sustainably dressed for the event, wearing clothing from a clothing swap!

In this country, you gotta get the woman first. Then when you get woman, you get the sexy time. Then when you get the sexy time, then you get the family.

Some of you may recognize how this month’s feature tag line is similar to a famous quote from the movie Scarface. Shout out to Tony Montana. February hosts several special occasions in Ottawa/Ontario/worldwide. The month is home to Black History Month, Valentine’s Day, and Family Day, to name a few. We were lucky enough to have a few shoots surrounding Valentine’s Day and Family Day. Shout out to the Black History Month community who hosted many events to remind us of rich and historical cultures and celebrate the many achievements in Ottawa’s beautiful and thriving black community. Make sure to always sustain your culture[s] to ensure its resilience! urbanforest was also honoured with being showcased at February’s Hub & Spoke at Hub Ottawa on the last day of February. We were able to speak about the inspiration behind the initiative, where it stands now, and future goals and aspirations. Thank you Hub Ottawa for the opportunity and providing a social innovation centre for the nation’s capital.

During urbanforest’s inaugural photoshoot at ThimbleCakes back in January, Wendy and Ali showed us the joys of a romantic date and classic chivalry. With the signature red velvet cupcake, they indulged and demonstrated the innocence and excitement of a quaint rendezvous. Chivalry will always be appreciated and reciprocated properly, so fellas, don’t hold back! Young Janes provided sustainable fashion for the shoot, and Ef Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Malorie Bertrand, styled the shoot. Zena Saab, our house make-up artist, made everyone look great for the cameras, and house photographer, Gilbert Kimani, was behind the camera.

For your next special occasion or intimate date, please bring yourself to ThimbleCakes and take in the deliciousness of local, organic desserts! Your loved one will be impressed with your desire to feed them with wholesome sweets and support Ottawa’s local business community.

Many of you, like us at urbanforest, have enjoyed being part of the client community at Victoire. Having opened up a second location in Westboro, the ladies at Victoire clearly are doing well with Ottawa’s love and support. The two beautiful locations house an array of items to peruse through, there is something here for everyone! Leading up to Valentine’s Day, Victoire hosted a ‘Vintage Lingerie Pop-Up Shop’ at their Dalhousie location. With selection from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, we had a lot of fun checking out old school sexy time attire. If you want to add some authentic, historical and elegantly feminine lingerie to your collection, make it vintage! It’s amazing to take notice of the difference in what women were offered for lingerie back in the day, and what is available to us today. The pop-up shop boasted florals, pastels, raunchy, elegant, practical, and sexy options. We were dressed in clothes from a clothing swap whilst doing the shoot. This boutique is amazing in general, thank you ladies of Victoire!

When the McGuinty government introduced Family Day to Ontario in 2008, many families were thrilled and embraced the opportunity to spend time together. It gave busy parents the opportunity to have some wintertime fun with the young ones. The day also provided those without children to relax, catch up with friends, or take a quick getaway. This year, we were invited by two families to join in on their outdoor excursion to Hog’s Back and Vincent Massey Park on Family Day 2012. We took in the beauty of nature within the city, and were surprised by sustainable design in the middle of Vincent Massey Park.

Vincent Massey Park is a great site for community gatherings, company picnics and family reunions. The park has quiet, wooded walking paths, rolling meadows, scenic vistas and open grassy areas for playing sports. With its picnic tables, electrical hook-ups and barbecue [BBQ] pits, Vincent Massey Park has all the amenities for an enjoyable picnic, large or small. There is one softball diamond and a bandstand at Vincent Massey Park. The Capital’s recreational paths also pass through the Park, making it an excellent place start exploring the Capital by bike. ~ [NCC]

Vincent Massey Park’s carbon neutral pavilion

Rather than simply “fixing up” the aging infrastructure at Ottawa’s Vincent Massey Park, the

NCC built a new service pavilion that incorporates several sustainable construction practices.

Designed in-house, the structure incorporates features such as low-flow toilets and waterless

urinals to reduce water consumption, as well as rainwater harvesting technology, which will

meet 90 percent of the pavilion’s water needs. Through the use of 27 solar panels, renewable

energy is being generated and fed back into the provincial power grid to fully offset any

energy consumed by the pavilion. It all results in net-zero energy consumption and a carbon

neutral building.

The work at Vincent Massey Park and the 30 solar panels installed at the Hog’s Back Park

pavilion represent the first projects to generate revenue for the NCC via the Ontario Power

Authority’s microFIT Program. The new service pavilion is expected to yield $5,000 in annual

revenues over the next two decades. ~ [NCC]
